María Rato Barrio (PhD) lectures, researches and publishes in the fields of urban segregation and violence, community development, interculturalism, sport for development, and research methodologies, mainly at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid - UPM, where she is as well a member of the Advisory Council of Cooperation for Development, and of the Group for Cooperation DIM. She finished her PhD at UPM in 2009, with a thesis about Physical Activity and Sport as a tool to promote Interculturalism in post war contexts. She obtained Degrees in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, in Social and Cultural Anthropology, and in Teacher Training; a Specialist Professional Degree in Latin American Studies; a Masters in Culture, Society and Development in Latin America, followed by a Masters in Cooperation for Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Aid. Since 1999, she has been involved in field assessment, implementation, evaluation, research and coordination in different development projects, especially in Latin America and Africa.
