  I am a full professor in the Department of Development Studies at the University of South Africa. After eight years in college management, I have now returned to my substantive position in the department and I am eager to re-engage with my home discipline of Development Studies, but also with people working and teaching in cognate areas. I have attended (as a listener) two previous sustainability conferences offered by Common Ground and have found them to be invigorating. My main areas of interested are: gender and development; education and development; human security and development.

  I obtained my first two degrees (BA in Political Sciences and BA Honours in Development Studies) at the University of Johannesburg (formerly known as the Rand Afrikaans University). In 1986 I obtained an MA in Development Studies with the title "Community development: scientific concept or metaphor?" (Free translation.) My doctoral thesis was entitled "The role of the World Bank in education provision and financing in Africa: problems and lessons." (Free translation.)
