I am an Associate Professor in Ohio University’s School of Media Arts and Studies, where I also direct a graduate program that emphasizes media and social change. Though an amateur photographer, my artistic endeavors are strongly related to my professional activities as a professor, and I have had photos shown in the Columbus Museum of Art, selected for a number of juried competitions, and used in publications that include NGO reports and a book. Though I was once a photographer who used a manual focus camera, B&W film, and developed photos in a darkroom, over the past three years I have concentrated exclusively on mobilephotography. This undertaking has been inspired in large part through working with literally hundreds of students from throughout the world, who are from relatively less affluent countries when compared to the United States. Their interests in creating artistic content to promote social change, in conjunction with my own understanding of how taking and disseminating photos is now a possibility afforded to virtually anyone with a mobile phone, has encouraged me to explore the creative possibilities – and challenges – associated with mobilephotography.
