  Kristiina Valter Mai obtained her Systems Design Engineering degree from the University of Waterloo and her MSc and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto. She teaches Biomedical and Sustainability Engineering at Ryerson University. Her research interests are in Sustainability Engineering, including Environmental, Health and Socio-Cultural Sustainability. She is developing sensors and systems to support Green Roof Urban Agriculture. Dr. Valter Mai is also interested in Sensory Perception and Language Classification. She has published and spoken extensively in many fields of study including Space and Microgravity research, in which she came to appreciate the delicate balance of the Earth's natural systems and its people.
