Dr. Kathryn F Whitmore (PhD, 1992, University of Arizona) became the Director of the Early Childhood Research Center at the University of Louisville in 2013 and holds the Ashland/Nystrand Chair in Early Childhood Research. Dr. Whitmore uses a critical sociocultural lens to understand early literacy development and teaching, and the intersections of language, culture and power in classrooms and families. Her community engaged scholarship is grounded in her values of innovative arts-based research methodologies within a qualitative tradition. Dr. Whitmore’s most recent book publications include a series (co-edited with Richard J Meyer) of titles: Reclaiming Reading (2011, Routledge), Reclaiming Writing (2014, Routledge) and Reclaiming Early Childhood Literacies (2017, Routledge). Additional publications are available in International Journal of Education and the Arts, Language Arts, Journal of Early Childhood Literacy, and other refereed journals. Dr. Whitmore is the current president of the Center for Expansion of Language and Thinking, an international nonprofit thought collective whose members believe in the principles of education for democracy with a focus on natural language learning and inquiry.
