Judy A. Greenberg was appointed the Director of The Kreeger Museum in January 1994. The museum was the former residence of Carmen and David Lloyd Kreeger. It was designed by noted architect Philip Johnson and houses the Kreegers’ formidable art collection of 19th and 20th century European, American, and African art. As the founding Director, Ms. Greenberg transformed the private residence into one of the most cherished gems in the District of Columbia. In addition to providing vision and conceptual leadership, she is responsible for originating innovative programs involving art, architecture, and music for the museum and the greater Washington, DC community.
Ms. Greenberg is committed to broadening the public’s understanding and appreciation of the arts. Her background as a studio artist and educator directly relates to the approach taken at The Kreeger Museum. She is actively engaged with curators in the museum’s exhibition program, with artists and architects who participate in school programs and public lectures, and with musicians who teach master classes and perform concerts. Ms. Greenberg initiated the programs Painting Sound, Art On Site, The Kreeger Museum Biennial Artist Award and DC Citypiece: Monuments at the Millennium. DC Citypiece, 1998-2000, brought the visual and performing arts together through activities that culminated with an exhibition of Washington artists at The Kreeger Museum, an exhibition of children’s art at the National Children’s Museum, and an original orchestral work composed by Robert Kapilow and performed by the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The National Symphony Orchestra, National Public Radio, and more than twenty community organizations were partners in this endeavor. Ms. Greenberg received recognition for her accomplishments in December 2000, when she was nominated as a finalist to receive the Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in Service to the Arts, the highest honor in the arts conferred on an individual by the District of Columbia.
Ms. Greenberg’s most recent initiative was ColorField.remix, spring 2007. This city-wide visual arts celebration included The Kreeger Museum along with over 30 venues - museums, galleries, non-profit alternative spaces, Cultural Tourism DC, WCTC, DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities and the business community. Ms. Greenberg felt it was time for Washington, DC to pay homage to the critically acclaimed Washington Color School of the 1950s-1960s. The ColorField.remix collaboration marked the largest celebration of painting ever held in the Washington area.
In 1986, while a member of the Cultural Arts Commission for the City of Rockville, Ms. Greenberg founded a regional art center in Montgomery County, Maryland. Rockville Arts Place (newly renamed Metropolitan Center for the Visual Arts, VisArts), through cultural and educational enrichment opportunities, serves residents and artists of the City of Rockville, Montgomery County, metropolitan Washington, DC and Baltimore. For her efforts, she received recognition from the Governor of Maryland, the State Legislature, then Mayor Douglas M. Duncan of the City of Rockville, and the late Louis L. Goldstein, Comptroller of the State of Maryland.
Ms. Greenberg has been a participant in the art world for over thirty years. She has a long record of involvement with professional and cultural organizations. A native of New York City, Ms. Greenberg earned a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University in Studio Art and Education, continued graduate studies in Studio Art and completed the Museum Management Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
