Jon Heshka is a professor at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. He's played semi-pro volleyball in Brazil, worked as a climbing guide and led expeditions around the world, trained and coordinated search and rescue fulltime in BC, and ran Petzl's rescue and rope access division in the US before coming to TRU. Jon is with the Adventure Studies Department and has also served as Associate Dean of Law for four years. He teaches courses in business, law and risk management, mountain rescue, and sports law. Jon consults with all levels of government and the private sector and has worked as an expert witness in Canada, the US and Europe in matters relating to adventuer sport risk management. He's co-authored a university textbook entitled Managing Risk: Systems Planning for Outdoor Adventure Programs which represents the next generation about risk and adventure and has written chapters on "The Legal Context for Outdoor Recreation" in Risk Management in the Outdoor published by Cambridge University Press and a chapter on "Legal Issues in Extreme Sport" in Extreme Sports Medicine published by Springer International Publishing AG. Jon has written 60+ articles in several journals including the international Sports Law Review and Sport and the Law Journal as well as 11 newspapers including The Globe and Mail and the Guardian, and two climbing magazines. He's also presented at more than 30 conferences worldwide including the World Association for Sport Management Conference, Sports & Recreation Law Conference and the British Association for Sport and Law Conference.
