Janet Kagan is Founding Partner of Art-Force. She leads strategic planning and design for all iniitatives and field-directs studio work in neglected neighborhoods and rural areas to creatively address social, economic, and physical injustice. Working in partnerships with local leadership, artists, designers, and nonprofits, each project reaches beyond goals and policies to recognize and deepen cultural, artistic, and aesthetic imprints of place. Ms Kagan has experience across multiple sectors having held senior positions in architectural and interpretative design firms, public and private nonprofits, and municipal government. She has designed and led more than one hundred civic and neighborhood development projects, mobilized and mentored leaders across America to effect aesthetic change to benefit their communities, and regularly participates on grant review panels and artist selection juries. She currently serves on the Placemaking Leadership Council (since 2015); AgArts (since 2015); Reviewer for the International Journal of the Arts in Society (since 2012); and, was Board Chair of the Public Art Network at Americans for the Arts (2009-2011). Her education includes Duke University (MA:Philosophy of Art); Simmons School of Management (MBA); Hampshire College (Political and Social Theory); and, collaborations with the people and places with whom she is engaged.
