Dr. Bonilla is an Associate Professor of Conflict Studies in the Hamline University School of Business in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the founding director of the Hamline University Race, Gender & Beyond Faculty Development Project. He is a nationally recognized consultant in the area of organizational diversity in and brings to his work nearly three decades of experience working with institutions on issues of cultural competence. He is the past Chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee to the National Conference on Racial & Ethnic Diversity in American Higher Education. His current research looks at approaches to educating and assessing cultural competence, and, at racial diversity in environmental and outdoor organizations.
He received his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts' School of Education in Organizational Development. Dr. Bonilla's dissertation research, entitled “Walking the Walk: Towards Creating More Multiracial Institutions of Higher Education” examined how one school of human services made the transition from a predominantly White to a racially diverse institution of higher education.
