James T. R. Jones holds an undergraduate degree with highest distinction from the University of Virginia and a law degree with honors from Duke University. He practiced at an elite Wall Street law firm, clerked for a federal appellate judge, and since 1985 has taught at the law schools at the Universities of Chicago (1985-86) and Louisville (1986-present). In 2008 he disclosed he has battled the severe mental illness bipolar disorder for over thirty years, with five psychiatric hospitalizations ranging from a few days to over six months. He is one of only two law professors in the nation publicly to acknowledge having a severe mental illness and thus directly to attack the stigma against those with mental illness. Since 2008 he has written and spoken extensively about successful professionals with serious mental diseases. He is particularly interested in assuring adequate mental healthcare for the all of the booming population of those with longstanding mental illnesses between ages fifty and sixty-five who lack sufficient insurance or other means to pay for it.
