Update 2: GRE

Using GRE score successfully

The graduate Records Exam, GRE, predicts if a person will be successful in a program. In many institutions, they rely on the scores of this test for admissions into their program. When searching articles that discuss the success rate of students with high GRE scores, there is a vast amount of research done on the predictability of students’ success. In an article of success in Biomedical graduate school, the results showed that the reliance on the GRE score did not have any significant effect on the graduation rate of the students. Universities rely on students to complete a research project to complete their program. In the study, the GRE score does not have a significant predictability on research productivity. Although these tests are relied upon for admissions, they do not look at the individual ability of a student to complete the program.

There was also research done of minority students taking the test. When the GRE started to be used as a requirement for a program, the minority application rate decreased. This means there was an access issue for these students and it hindered their ability to apply to the program of their choice. When looking at the difference in STEM programs, men who scored higher on the test actually left the programs earlier than those who scored lower.
