Hiroko Tomioka earned her MA and PhD degrees from University of California, Los Angeles in Education (Social Science and Comparative Education). Her dissertation topic is “Self-Concepts in Japanese students: Its relation to Teacher Ratings.” During 2003-2005 she was working as research fellow in Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. She conducted comparative study between Japan and the United States, focusing the development of self-concept in childhood and adolescence. She conducted questionnaires and interviews with students and teachers in totally 11 elementary schools and 9 colleges in Japan and the United States. Total subject was more than 2000 students. Her current research projects include the Arithmetic competence and self-efficacy in elementary students, and cooperative learning and self-esteem. She has published her research in several journals including the Japanese Journal of Personality. Also, she has published her book titled “Self-concept in childhood and adolescence.” She presented papers and poster sessions at international, national, and regional conferences. Currently she’s a tenured associate professor of Education at Soka University, Japan.
