Heather A. Shanks-McElroy, Ph.D., M.S.W., is a Professor of Education and Faculty Fellow for Assessment at Keystone College (La Plume, PA). She earned a Ph.D. in Human Development (Specialization: Social Work) and an M.S.W. from Marywood University, and undergraduate degrees from Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario). Prior to entering academia, Dr. Shanks-McElroy was an active on-staff and consulting clinician in long term care facilities throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania, specializing in behavioral alternatives to pharmacological restraint usage with individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. She currently teaches educational assessment and research coursework and maintains an active research practice in the areas of adult day services, home and community based services for the rural elderly, and other areas of contemporary aging and education. She has served as a peer reviewer for the Alzheimer Association research grant program since 2000, and is a member of the Lewy Body Dementia Association National Caregiver Discussion Panel, and the Editorial Review Board of Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association. In May 2014, she received the Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Chair Award for Distinguished Faculty Service.
