Dr. Heather Downey is a lecturer in social work at La Trobe University, Australia. Dr. Downey’s PhD research concerned ageing Australian farming couples’ retirement decision making in the contemporary context. Dr. Downey’s research has been nominated for the La Trobe University’s Nancy Millis award for outstanding theses. Dr. Downey was awarded a Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University in 2001 and a Bachelor of Social Work from Monash University in 2005. Following a decade of social work practice she returned to academia and was awarded a PhD in 2017. Dr. Downey’s research interests include rural ageing and retirement. She is currently exploring how the concept of entitlement is managed in the discourse surrounding the Murray Darling Basin Plan five years after this important environmental water policy was released.
