I initially studied social sciences at the University of Konstanz and went on to work in various functions in the private sector and public administration in Bremen. In the course of my work as an organisation expert and IT consultant, I was able to gain experience of different strategies of introducing technology, possibilities for changing the organisation of work and design of software systems.
In 1994 I obtained a Dr.rer.pol. at the University of Bremen, writing a doctorate thesis on "The Structure of Work and Technology in the Context of Gender-Hierarchical Division of Labour". At this point I was appointed to a professorship for occupational and social sciences at the Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences. The focus of the professorship was on human-oriented concepts which can counter a purely technology-centred approach. At the same time, I also concentrated on subjects of women's and gender research and set up the research centre "Technology and Gender in Applied Sciences" at the Furtwangen University of the Applied Sciences. This included coordinating research projects in the fields of labour, Internet and higher education research.
I have been a professor for occupational science and gender studies at the Hamburg University of Technology since March 2003. Along with my colleagues, I am currently setting up a new Working Group "Work - Gender - Technology". We use gender perspectives to examine issues from the area of technology and Internet research, research into learning and higher education, labour research and mobility research.
In November 2003 I was elected as a spokeswoman of the Gender Studies in Hamburg.
