Erin Carraher is a licensed architect and Assistant Professor at the University of Utah's School of Architecture where she is the coordinator for the first-year undergraduate architecture studios. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on communications and digital technologies and is the co-director of the School's digital fabrication lab. As a senior researcher at ITAC, the Integrated Technology in Architecture Center, Erin is working on ways to translate digital technologies into the classroom in applied ways.
Her recent work includes research in emerging modes of collaborative practice in the form of the Leadership in Collaborative Architectural Practice (LCAP) continuing education resource she co-developed for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) with colleague Ryan E. Smith and the Forefront: Architects as Collaborative Leaders conference she co-chaired with David Scheer for the AIA’s Center for Integrated Practice, which brought together 75 speakers from around the country to provide case studies on integrated modes of project delivery from the perspective of the architect, contractor, engineer, and owner.
Additionally, Erin has worked with Associate Professor Jörg Rügemer to develop Project: Architecture, which is a collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Utah (GSU) to develop an outreach and education initiative that exposes young girls to opportunities for careers in the built environment. The kick-off project of this collaboration was the design and construction of three cabins for the GSU where architecture students and girl scouts were exposed to all aspects of the design and construction process. This project has received national recognition by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture’s Collaborative Practice and Diversity Achievement awards and as an honorable mention Public Interest Design Award.
Erin is the chair of AIA Utah’s Young Architects Forum and sits on a number of local and national boards and advisory groups related to professional practice and architectural education.
