Elda Lyster is a senior lecturer in adult education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She has considerable expertise and an international reputation as an adult basic education (ABE) specialist. She initiated the New Readers Project and maintains a strong interest in publishing and researching materials for newly literate adults. Her work has also encompassed teaching and internships for the professional development of ABE practitioners. This has included the establishment in 1996 of the Postgraduate Diploma in ABE, the first such award in South Africa (now BEd Honours ABET). Elda is involved in a number of research collaborations in the field of ABE, as well as ongoing consultation to the field in relation to policy formulation and evaluation of provision. She is a trustee of the Adult Literacy, Basic Education and Devleopment Foundation.
