Ekain Rojo Labaien is a PhD Candidate in Communication at the Basque Country' s University UPV-EHU in Bilbao. He has previously worked as a journalist and although his primary focus is media related, he also has keen interests in national identities, politics and football events. His research concentrates on the way that the media constructs national identities using football, with the Basque Country being an ideal place in which to observe this, because it is a small territory with three individual national identities. Furthermore there are many ways in which people identify with the Basque national identity, making it even more complex to define in a modern context. Football is crucial to understand the evolution of politics and national identities in the Basque Country in the 20th century, and to visualise the future close to globalisation processes as well. He is therefore researching football events taking into account the media’s central position therein. Without the influence of media, football would not have been as influential on national identity as it currently is.
