Update 6 - Using Fanfics in EFL collaborative writing

The multimodal digital textual genre Fanfiction is inserted in the concept of community, as it fits in all its characteristics. It is inserted in online platforms that have several members and that create personal relationships, that help each other and that share, among themselves, their values, interests and tastes. These members mutually participate in the consumption, production and sharing of produced texts. And the platforms, that keep the texts produced by Fanfictions, are durable and receive more and more members over the years (Erickson, 1997 apud Marcuschi, 2004).

Fanfiction convey their meanings by using more than one semiotic code. This code or language mode (visual, audible, gestural, tactical, spatial) can interact in a single space, building meanings of a specific textual genre (Pinto, 2009). Thus, Fanfiction is defined as a multimodal textual genre because it presents the written language, images, music and videos in its structural composition, allowing readers to better understand the narrative events. Also known as Fanfic or simply Fic, Fanfictions come from the English words Fan and fiction.

Fanfic 2

Fanfics follow a narrative sequence and present an initial situation, complication, resolution and outcome. The writer of this genre uses a universe previously existing in another media icon to create a new narrative in an alternative universe. That is, Fanfictions make room for the writers' creativity, allowing them to add new ideas from previous stories, regardless of the point of view they choose – be that from a certain character or narrative event (Cavalcanti, 2010).

Fanfic 3

Fanfics can, hence, be used in different educational contexts, especially those whose purpose is to motivate creative writing. As there are several Fanfiction platforms such as Wattpad, fanfiction.net, asianfanfics and Archive of Our Own, students can search for Fanfic stories, comment on them, and suggest written changes to them. Therefore, Fanfics can be used in  reading and writing classes, literature classes, and in grammar and vocabulary ones, when the focus is on correcting  Fanfics (peer reviews).
