Dr. Chris Demaske is an associate professor of communication in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Program at the University of Washington Tacoma. Her research focuses on issues of free speech in contemporary society. She is the author of Modern Power and Free Speech: Contemporary Culture and Issues of Equality, a book that focuses on speech rights for members of disempowered groups. Currently, she is pursuing research agendas focused on internet hate speech, academic freedom and government speech doctrine. Demaske's teaching interests include a combination of theory-based courses such as Communication Law and Communication History and skills-based courses such as Feature Writing and Investigative Reporting. She is also the founder and faculty supervisor for the UWT Russian Journalism Exchange Program.
