With a background in education, I have served as a librarian, magnet program coordinator, and all-girls leadership program director. Some of my students have been athletes, but that has not been my primary responsibility. Many might wonder, why the interest in Black male student-athletes. Simply stated, my children. My children by birth and the children I have served. When teaching high school English, I supported the athletic department’s study hall. As I circulated the classroom asking students about future goals, the majority of Black boys stated that they wanted to be basketball or football players. I wondered then why more had not responded team owners, cardiologists, or any other career path, and hence began my interest in Black male student-athletes. I never imagined going on to marry a former basketball player and current coach with whom I would have two sports loving sons. Although my kids have been raised in basketball gyms and football stadiums while I pursued graduate degrees, they have also been nurtured to become leaders who pursue lifelong learning. These two spirited Black boys may one day engage in Division I athletics and I am hopeful that this research will positively impact their future in collegiate sports.
