The Tabo Monastry located in the town of Tabo, Himachal Pradesh, India has been in existence since 996 AD. Around those times, Tabo served as an important intermediary between the Bhuddhist communities in India and Tibet (now, part of China). The monastry is home to many ancient relics. The monastry is located in the Spiti Valley, an area that is a Cold Desert. The material of construction of the Tabo Monastry reflects the traditional architecture, as well as the realities of being situated in a cold desert. During a visit to the Tabo town, I witnessed a torrential downpour, and was intrigued as to how an area that was a Cold Desert was witnessing such a high amount of rainfall, and also on the impact of such rainfall on the Tabo Monastry. The paper proposes to study the impact of Climate Change on the Tabo Monastry, and ways in which it could be preserved for future generations. This paper was accepted by Dr William Cope for the Sixteenth International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic & Social Sustainability. However, I could not present it then due to a family emergency. My registration fees were transferred from the 2020 to the 2021 conference.
