Vitamin D Insufficiency and Asthma

A long term survey of over 10,000 children and 20,000 adults in the US with asthma from 2001-2010 looked at the association of Vitamin D insufficiency with current asthma symptoms. It was found that an insufficiency in Vitamin D correlated to current wheezing in both children and adults, as well as lower FEV1 and FRC. Further analysis into factors such as age, sex, and income revelaed that this association only occured in non-Hispanic white children and non-Hispanic whites and black in adults. These results show not only that the immune system plays a role in asthma, but that ethnicity of the patient should be considered in treatment.
