Indonesia Backpack Project’s Updates

Free Time

"On Fridays, students have a free choice morning to decide what they want to do during free time. There are many options available for students, other than just sports activities. While sports are incorporated, other options include singing, dancing, learning English, playing chess, and much more. This is a photograph of students playing soccer during their free time, as this seemed to be the sport they enjoyed most.

This photograph is significant to me because this was one point during my journey when I was immersed in the experience of cultural pastimes in Indonesia. I believe it is very important for students to have a significant break from learning during the day. There should be more free choice time like this available for students in the US, instead of always telling them what activity they should be doing. In my future classroom, I will make sure to have as much student choice as possible, because I believe it can change the attitudes of students and make them more willing to learn."
