Didactics is a teaching method associated with instruction. It deals with the science of instruction and direction for any oriented field of study, is teacher-centered and is based on a synthesis of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Therefore, “didactics” mainly refers to the theory and practical applications behind the science of teaching. It can also be thought of as the foundation, or the main steps and stages involved in teaching, in a particular field.

“Didactics” deals with goals, themes, methods, and frameworks within a particular field. It is based on a variety of teaching theories, and in a broader sense, the theory and practical application of teaching and learning methods. Some would argue that the word 'didactic' can have both positive and negative connotations. For instance, a person with a "didactic" personality tends to teach and guide. Folk tales created centuries ago are also good examples of the didactics method. This type of literature is written specifically for children, with a clear educational purpose. However, it was also created to teach children (and adults alike) a rigorous lesson in social behavior, norms, and moral values.

The didactic teaching method follows a scientific approach or educational style. This approach is often studied and applied by teachers to engage students and ultimately stimulate ethical learning and the transfer of knowledge in any field of study. For example, in language teaching, the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach to language teaching is a very common approach used in European language classes.

A modern and innovative didactic approach to distance teaching and learning is open learning and Mass Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Everyone has access to them and everyone can learn on their own. With unlimited access from all over the world, students are free to choose from different topics and areas of interest.

The didactic methods and their underlying theories focus on the fundamental knowledge that students possess, as well as their needs. These methods seek to improve at this level and assist teachers in communicating information in the best possible way. Thus, a didactic method or approach is the starting point in a lesson plan, where the overall goal is to impart knowledge. The teacher, instructor, or educator acts in this role as an authority, but also as a guide and a resource for students.
