A Media Studies Approach to Misinformation
Melissa Zimdars, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication and Media, Merrimack College, USA
Melissa Zimdars is an Assistant Professor of Communication and Media at Merrimack College. She is the co-editor of the book Fake News: Understanding Media and Misinformation in the Digital Age (MIT, 2020). Zimdars went viral in 2016 after creating a Google Doc for her students titled "False, Misleading, Clickbait-y, and/or Satirical News Sources," which eventually turned into a database of 1,000 "information" sources. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, Chronicle Review, Television and New Media, and Popular Communication, and she has been featured by The Los Angeles Times, New York Magazine, CNN, BBC, and more.
