A Democracy Exhibition Touring Libraries with the Aim to Reach New Audiences

Abstract

After a visit to the Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg, Sweden, a librarian from a small community library south of the city, contacted the museum to express interest in its existing democracy exhibition. One thing led to another, and a collaboration formed which has resulted in a pop-up exhibition called Democracy does not exist – we make it! now touring libraries across Sweden in three different adaptations. This paper discusses the benefits of this initial collaboration and its effects on widening the reach of the exhibition by using the networks of libraries. When museum exhibitions reach outside the museum walls, they allow for new possibilities of inclusion and sustainable development by reaching new audiences and communities. The intersection between libraries and museums is at the centre of this study exploring increased efforts of inclusion.
