Epistemic Advantage of Time-lapses

Abstract

Time-lapse photography projects a series of snapshots taken at regular intervals to demonstrate the relativity of change in a phenomenon. It provides some cognitive advantages through perceiving a moving phenomenon in succession and compression of time. We claim that time-lapse images, in spite of the other altered pace image forms like slow-motion and chronophotography, are not transparent. They don’t just help us to see what is happening in the scene. As a time-based art form, time-lapse is a tool for discovering the whole of an invisible process and can reveal cognitive facts. Time-lapse enhances our consciousness about a temporal unfolding event. Phenomena represented by time-lapse are perceived differently from their real time-scale. They are represented in speeded-up time so that the visual perception mechanism can discern some of their otherwise visually inaccessible features. Our aim in this study is to explain how altering the temporal aspect with time-lapse might change the perception of the features of the represented event.
