An Unsettled Life: Images Make a Human Connection

Abstract

When images are used in collaboration to bridge community and academic settings, results can be powerful. Florida Atlantic University’s Peace, Justice, and Human Rights program put out a call for an interdisciplinary project. The School of Nursing, The School of Social Work, and the Department of Anthropology responded with the work they are doing within the local community with people who are experiencing homelessness, the healthcare practitioners at a local hospital, volunteers from a local church, local law officers, county agencies, and national companies. What began as an event to provide footcare for the homeless, ended up becoming a yearly event to bring many of those from within these communities together. In the process of documenting these events, many academic papers were written and published, online exhibits published, students wrote theses and won awards for their work, gallery exhibits spun off, classroom tools developed, and overall many experienced a changed perception of one another.
