Attention, Surprise, Shock and Anxiety: Aesthetic Strategies Stimulated by a Phenomenology of Transparency in Thriller Films

Abstract

In seeking to understand the phenomenology of transparency in thriller films; its essence, this paper will address its affect on the viewer; consciously and corporeally, through relating it to the concept of proximity, accessibility and touch and their role in inducing fear. By that, it will provide a new reading of the use of spatial transparency in film, and it will highlight its affect on the level of engagement between the spectator and the character. This paper distinguishes three forms of transparency; personal transparency, substance transparency and sensorial transparency.
