The Illustrated Witch: How Visual Representations of Witches in Early Modern Europe Controlled Female Sexuality

Abstract

Through depictions of witches in early modern Europe, those in power controlled female sexuality and autonomy. By connecting the notions of independent or self-dependent women as sacrilegious and heretical, the Church created the image of a perfect Christian woman. If a woman went against this image, she could be branded a witch and subject to trial as such. Visual representations of witches in this period and beyond contribute to this “ideal Christian woman.”
