Patterns of Consumption of Energy Drinks and Adverse Effects on Mental Health in Mexican Adolescents

Abstract

Energy drinks (ED) are functional supplements with higher caffeine and taurine content marketed to adolescents and young adults to boost energy. Adverse health effects have been reported in the scientific literature. This study evaluates ED consumption patterns and their effects on, adolescents’ physical and mental functioning of adolescents. A cross-sectional online self-report survey was conducted on 1422 students aged between 14 and 19 years from Mexico. The questionnaire included sections about demographic data, consumption patterns of energy drinks, and other caffeinated beverages, self-destructive, and addictive behavior, anxiety, depression, and aggressiveness. The findings indicate that the prevalence of consumption of energy drinks was 29.8% (n=424), and that of caffeinated drinks was 92.8% (n=1321). A reduction in the prevalence of energy drink consumption was observed during the pandemic. Mild, moderate, and high levels of taurine beverage consumption were correlated with the physical symptoms of chest pain, palpitations, tachycardia, and behavioral symptoms of impulsivity. Caffeinated beverages were correlated with physical effects such as excessive urination, fatigue, lack of rest, insomnia, and, psychological symptoms of nervousness, anxiety, and restlessness. The bivariate statistical analysis indicated a higher presence of symptoms of aggressiveness, somatic problems, self-harm, and anxiety in adolescents who consume energy drinks.
