Early Detection of Behavioral and Emotional Risk Through Universal Screening

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Jihye Kim

Depression, anxiety, and stress are common mental health problems among adolescents. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have found that students who suffer from mental health problems (e.g., ADHD, anxiety, or depression) tend to manifest school and social problems. Unfortunately, research has shown that the significant rate of children who suffer from behavioral or emotional problems remains unidentified because of their mild symptoms. As a result, the symptoms continue to develop gradually and eventually become mental illnesses. When mild symptoms become a noticeable mental illness, treatment becomes more challenging and takes longer than in the early stages. Detecting children’s mental health problems early can prevent the further development of mental health problems into adulthood. The early detection of children who are at mental risk is possible through universal mental health screening in the school setting. The present study focuses on the Behavioral and Emotional Screening System to identify students who were at mild risk of mental health problems and to examine their academic trajectories over four years. The findings suggest that students at mild risk of behavioral and emotional problems showed similar academic performance as other students. Students with mild symptoms can be easily overlooked if academic performance were relied on as the measure of their academic success. Their symptoms could develop as noticeable mental illness later. The BESS is an effective solution to identify students at mild risk of behavioral and emotional problems in the early stages and may be helpful in maintaining consistent and positive academic performance over time.

Advancing Basketball in the US for Mass Healthy Lifelong Participation View Digital Media

This study provides information on what might be implemented as best methods to advance basketball in the USA for lifelong healthy development of every participant. The authors utilized the model of integrated elite and mass sport development from past research which formed the foundation for a survey of 100 US basketball coaches and 10 administrators to generate a snapshot of perceptions of the current sport system and possibilities for its further growth. Results suggested best US and international practices in: attracting participants to basketball (in addition to being introduced to basketball by themselves and parents, potential basketball players are attracted from outside the sport’s participation base, particularly using different types of searches at schools); retention of participants by using guidelines for multiple development stages young basketball players are trained on as recommended by USA Basketball (USAB) and other domestic and international governing bodies (NGBs) for nurturing athletes from the introduction to sport through the achievement of peak performance on to retirement from sport (US Olympic and Paralympic Committee encourages and helps all its NGBs to implement such guidelines as American Development Model); healthy progression of participants to the highest desired level of performance by using a multi-stage system of basketball qualification integrated with a system of fitness tests for mass participation.

An Analysis of Not-guilty Verdict Reasons of Sexual Abuse Victimization among People with Intellectual Disabilities View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Wen Ying Liou

Sexual abuse victimization certainly has negative influences on victims’ health and wellness, including physiological and psychological aspects. The perpetrators of sexual abuse usually target persons who are weak and less likely to report the incident. As a result, people with disabilities are at higher risk of being sexually victimized than those without disabilities (Hershkowitz, Lamb, and Horowitz, 2007; Nosek, Foley, Hughes, and Howland, 2001). However, the perpetrators of sexual abuse who have been acquitted have the opportunity to abuse more people on one hand, and the justice for the victims cannot be reached on the other hand. In a report of the Taiwan’s Ministry of Justice (2017), the ratio of appeals and convictions of sexual abuse victimization for people with intellectual disabilities are lower than that of people without intellectual disabilities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the reasons for acquittal of sexual abuse victimization for people with intellectual disability. As for the research method, this study uses the thematic analysis method of qualitative research. The verdict records of sexual abuse victimization for people with intellectual disabilities will be collected through the verdict records inquiry system of the Judicial Department website of Taiwan. The verdict records were repeatedly read and meaningful units in the text were coded and summarized. Then all the summaries were categorized and transformed into concepts. In this way the data was thematically conceptualized to arrive at the acquittal reasons of sexual abuse victimization for people with intellectual disability.

Service Design for Transplant Networking in Colombia: Centralized Communication of the National Network of Donation and Transplants View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Carolina Espinosa Robledo

According to the Colombian Association of Organ Transplant (CAOT), Colombia has around 3000 people on lists waiting for transplant and the organ donations. Though those donations have decreased through the past years, medical doctors and logistic teams still have a huge amount of resources to handle when coordinating donor-receiver. All their communication and logistics processes are done through social networks, such as Whatsapp, which in cases trespass data privacy and have shown decentralized sensitive data. Thus, the aim of this research is designing an information service for the National Network of Donation and Transplants (NNDTC), tissues, and organs of Colombia, which allow different activities, such as logistics, information management, coordination, and data centralization for the regional coordinators involved. The methodology was performed in three phases: (1) Identify the information needs of the actual communication service through semi-structured interviews performed to the regional coordinators, (2) designing a mobile prototype in order to centralize data, (3) and service heuristic usability testing by experts on simulated scenarios. According to our results, the designed prototype based on regional coordinators' needs showed a decreased time in logistic tasks while connecting, donor-receiver. Also, usability testing showed efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction improved while performing tasks. At last, implementing services based on workers' needs in other medical scenarios may improve tasks efficiency and ergonomics workers’ quality. Family Health and Body Image as Predictors of Risky Eating Behaviors in Adolescents View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Bellaret Jimenez Aguilar

Risk eating behaviors affect adolescents due to the presence of feelings and thoughts which are based on the wrong perception of their body or some part of it and are related to aesthetic aspects, having repercussions on eating behaviors that lead to deterioration of the health. These behaviors are not considered pathological, but rather they are deviations of a person's eating which is located within a continuum, between a normal diet and the presence of an eating disorder. Studies on the influence of the family on the development of risky eating behaviors indicate the importance of continuous research on these behaviors to address them through prevention programs before they become established as disorders. Middle and high school students from the center, northeast and southeast of Mexico participated in the research. The type of study that was carried out was quantitative, predictive, descriptive and expo facto. The results show that there is a high correlation between the body image and risky eating behaviors, these are influenced by the adolescent's family health.

Analysis of Basic Movements of the Lower Limbs in Taekwondo Athletes View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Maria de Lourdes Cortés Ibarra,  Hector Becerril Mendoza,  Leonardo Mendoza López

Taekwondo is a discipline of contact between two competitors, because combat is the main form of expression which requires quick movements, good technique in those movements, high speed movements and unipedal supports; these factors are the main reasons of the development of sports injuries in this discipline, especially in the lower extremities, which are the most used because the main movements of this discipline are kicking techniques. Injuries in this discipline tend to be more likely to develop in the leg that represents the unipedal support when it is placed incorrectly and produces a bad distribution of weight on the joints, especially on the knee, which can lead to chronic injuries due to overuse. Kinesiology is a science that studies the movements based on body anatomy, so it is part of the branches to have sports medical care. Using images and kinesiological analysis of the angles of the joints in the lower extremities during the phases of the movement of the Dolly Chagui technique in a test made to a subject with taekwondo black belt, it makes possible to find the mistakes in his technique that let us generate a training protocol that allow to correct the technique and prevent chronic injuries due to poor weight distribution in the contact phases and acute injuries due to counterattack recovery.
