Service Design for Transplant Networking in Colombia: Centralized Communication of the National Network of Donation and Transplants

Abstract

According to the Colombian Association of Organ Transplant (CAOT), Colombia has around 3000 people on lists waiting for transplant and the organ donations. Though those donations have decreased through the past years, medical doctors and logistic teams still have a huge amount of resources to handle when coordinating donor-receiver. All their communication and logistics processes are done through social networks, such as Whatsapp, which in cases trespass data privacy and have shown decentralized sensitive data. Thus, the aim of this research is designing an information service for the National Network of Donation and Transplants (NNDTC), tissues, and organs of Colombia, which allow different activities, such as logistics, information management, coordination, and data centralization for the regional coordinators involved. The methodology was performed in three phases: (1) Identify the information needs of the actual communication service through semi-structured interviews performed to the regional coordinators, (2) designing a mobile prototype in order to centralize data, (3) and service heuristic usability testing by experts on simulated scenarios. According to our results, the designed prototype based on regional coordinators’ needs showed a decreased time in logistic tasks while connecting, donor-receiver. Also, usability testing showed efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction improved while performing tasks. At last, implementing services based on workers’ needs in other medical scenarios may improve tasks efficiency and ergonomics workers’ quality.
