Family Health and Body Image as Predictors of Risky Eating Behaviors in Adolescents

Abstract

Risk eating behaviors affect adolescents due to the presence of feelings and thoughts which are based on the wrong perception of their body or some part of it and are related to aesthetic aspects, having repercussions on eating behaviors that lead to deterioration of the health. These behaviors are not considered pathological, but rather they are deviations of a person’s eating which is located within a continuum, between a normal diet and the presence of an eating disorder. Studies on the influence of the family on the development of risky eating behaviors indicate the importance of continuous research on these behaviors to address them through prevention programs before they become established as disorders. Middle and high school students from the center, northeast and southeast of Mexico participated in the research. The type of study that was carried out was quantitative, predictive, descriptive and expo facto. The results show that there is a high correlation between the body image and risky eating behaviors, these are influenced by the adolescent’s family health.
