Comparison of Body Fat Percentage among U -19 Footballers Playing at Different Positions

Abstract

The objective of the study was to compare body fat percentage in U-19 football players , playing at different positions (Goalkeepers, Defenders, Midfielders and Forwards). For the purpose of the study one hundred twenty (N=120) U-19 male football players were selected from different schools and football academies of Delhi, who had a minimal participation at regional or state level championship. The age group of the players ranged between 16-19 years. Thirty players were selected in each playing position. Skinfold measurements were taken at three sites namely abdomen, suprailliac and triceps and body fat percentage was calculated. Descriptive statistics, one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and for pair wise comparison LSD post hoc test was employed. The findings of the study indicated a significant difference obtained in body fat percentage between different playing positions. The body fat percentage of the defenders was higher than the goalkeepers, midfielders and forwards. The findings of the study have a significant implication in the scientific implementation of talent identification and training programme for football players.
