Culture of Gatekeepers: Supporting the Student Athlete

Abstract

According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2012), “A gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide.” In the case of a student athlete, gatekeepers could be individuals in the role of a coach, trainer, physical therapist, academic advisor, and teammate. The aim of this paper is to more strongly define the culture of gatekeepers within the context of sport. Through this examination, we will identify roles of gatekeepers, the process and steps of gatekeeping, and potential barriers. Further, we will devise specific strategies to effective gatekeeping with student athletes.
