Using Screencast Feedback to Improve Undergraduate Students’ Speaking Skills in English

Abstract

Being able to communicate effectively in English is a skill required to succeed in the academic and workplace settings. However, speaking is one of the most difficult skills to develop when learning a new language, particularly English. In this paper, we present an innovative tool used to provide feedback to students’ speaking performance in the context of teaching English as a foreign Language (EFL). For this purpose, a screencast feedback technique was used with undergraduate students from a Chilean university to provide feedback on student’s individual performance when giving monologues in English. Preliminary findings suggest that the use of screencast feedback has a positive impact on students’ academic achievement as it helps them improve their speaking performance being grammar and pronunciation the linguistic components that benefit the most. In addition, screencast feedback is highly valued by students who see it as a motivating and promising strategy.
