E- learning - the Case of Primary Schools in Cyprus

Abstract

In 2020 Cyprus had to face a new change. Because of the pandemic (Covid-19), schools had to close their doors and teaching had to take place online for many weeks during March-May. The same happened in the current academic year (January 2021). Teachers and students had to use a specific platform (Microsoft Teams) for that purpose. As all the changes, the e-learning face many pressures and obstacles before and during it’s implementation. Teachers’ resistance was one of them. The purpose of the specific article is to examine the teachers’ opinion and practices during and after the implementation of the specific change. Interviews and a focus group with primary teachers were taken place in the Summer of 2020 in order to examine the aforementioned purpose. Results show that teachers were unprepared to use such a platform and shed light on many problems (e.g. technocratic) in the Cypriot Educational system.
