Matéria daHora - Higher Education based on Voice Experience: Interactive Classes Using Amazon Alexa

Abstract

With the COVI-19 pandemic, schools closed. We developed Matéria daHora to help high school students with a distance learning solution, without the need for expensive notebooks and high-speed WiFi. Matéria daHora, is a set of more than seventy interactive classes, in voice experience, based on Amazon Alexa. Launched in April in Brazil, Matéria daHora already has 5,500 users, 16,000 activations and grows 20% per month! Matéria daHora was developed following the principles of distance education and the adaptive learning model. Distance education is a communicative process where access to the knowledge base is done through technological resources, in the particular case of Matéria daHora, distance classes are defined as interactive voice experiences, based on Amazon Alexa technology. Adaptive learning uses technology and computational algorithms to place the student as the protagonist of his own learning journey, a dynamic self-reflection process, where the student structures, monitors, and evaluates their own learning. In this context, the teacher has a fundamental role, defining strategies for using Matéria daHora, which will increase the flow of interactions and collaboration between students. In this hybrid learning environment, the teacher is the main motivational agent, which encourages students to participate, discuss and share the knowledge acquired in Matéria daHora classes, in their face-to-face activities.
