Teaching Filipino Language in the New Normal: Survey on the Successful Techniques and Strategies Utilized by Public High School Teachers in Baguio City

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic was unprecedented by the world’s educational system. In the Philippines, it was faced with battling opinions and arguments on whether the classes should be continued or not. The public school system was greatly affected by this struggle on continuing classes despite the quarantine and lockdown protocols. After short planning by the Department of Education, it was decided to continue the school year with remote teaching and learning through the use of online technology and self-learning modules. This study surveyed teachers of Filipino Language in Junior High School on the techniques and strategies that they utilized and the challenges that they faced in the first two quarters of the school year. It included focus group discussions on the insights that they got from these experiences and what techniques and strategies could be helpful even after the pandemic. The results of the survey are very practical to a city like Baguio City and the Philippines in general where even before pandemic has a number of class suspensions due to typhoons and holidays.
