Podcast as an Educational Resource for the Awareness of Young Brazilians : The Experience “Shall We Talk about Syphilis?”

Abstract

This work presents details of the making of the production of the podcast “Shall We Talk about Syphilis?” as an Educational Resource for the awareness of young Brazilians concerning the necessity to prevent, test, and fight syphilis. The production, made by a group of students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and researchers of the Laboratory of Technological Innovation in Health, was one of the winning programs in a contest by the Ministry of Health of Brazil held in 2020. The agency decreed a syphilis epidemic in the country in 2016 and, since then, it has been spending several efforts in order to broaden the knowledge of target populations about the disease and its treatment and prevention. The choice of the podcast as an educational resource allowed the topic to be addressed in a conversation group that included the host, a specialist doctor and two young people. All the essential information for this audience - provided in the script - was addressed lightly and discerningly in the 17 minutes of the podcast, thus showing that the format, widely used nowadays for news and curiosities, can be used for mediation of educational content, meeting the premises of Distance Education for innovation and monitoring trends in information technology. The product also contributed to the expansion of the dissemination of the Syphilis No! Project, led by LAIS in a joint project with the Ministry of Health. The podcast is broadcast on radio stations in Brazil.
