Ethical Considerations of Reporting Missing Children in Mass Media

Abstract

A commonly used practice in the search for missing children is the use of publicity appeals using mass media tactics. The dissemination of images of missing children and their representation by the media raises issues regarding their safety while missing as well as the impact this may have on the protection of the child’s privacy and overall wellbeing once they return. The paper examines findings from an online survey with 107 staff from nineteen hotlines across the European Union. Two high profile cases that received international media coverage in recent years will also be referenced as examples. The paper highlights ethical considerations for journalists reporting such cases and examines journalists’ ethical responsibility for keeping the public’s need for information whilst reducing potential harm and discomfort to the child and their family.
