“I Would Like To Eat A ________ Meal.”: Disidentifying by Use of Foodways and Quare Performance Technologies

Abstract

Foodways is defined as a study of what, how, and why we eat with an emphasis on various food events and the food itself (Lexicon of food). My “I Would Like A ____ Meal.” piece is concerned with eating the performance. This performance allows me to push further and engage with relational aesthetics, call and response, improvisation and functionality within the black community. Meaning, I set up situations where I and the audience have to come up with responses on the spot, hence, the improv. But also the functionality part comes in when we realize how often microaggressions are actually part of all of our daily lives and therefore, always on the table. These requests prompt people to rethink these social issues revolving around microaggressions in different ways. Providing some solidity to these issues. Changing the way we experience the isms. Imagine experiencing racism by taste. What does racism taste like? And if racism is so bad why do we continue to cook it up?
