Washington D.C., a City of International Flavors: Stories around the Table

Abstract

Food is a reflect of history, family, and culture. Washington D.C., a city with more than two hundred years of history, is a place where everyday people from all around the world share their culture and one of the main ways they do it is through food. Around the capital of the United States is possible to find a different nationality restaurant every couple of blocks. In this places people who have immigrated to the U.S. try to share and recall their culture and the place where they come from. Italian pasta, French duck, Mexican tacos, Indian spices, and Ethiopian meat are some of the dishes that have presence in everyday life of Washington D.C. and help to write this city’s history through flavors, smells and stories of people who meet each other in the same place to enrich such an amazing city. This paper presents the history of the city, the different cultures, several experiences, and food traditions of nationalities that can be found in the capital of the United States to prove the importance of food in society.
