Preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Age: Singapore's Response

Abstract

Recent Singapore government initiatives reflect a determined commitment to developing employable citizens for the knowledge-based economy. Singapore has launched three initiatives—Smart Nation Singapore, SkillsFuture, and the creation of three new universities—in preparation for the fourth industrial revolution age. Amidst the global COVID outbreak worldwide and the shrinking of the economy, the Singapore government has introduced an expansionary budget in 2020 to help local workers stay employed and to support enterprises in retraining efforts further. This paper details the new rules of engagement and large scale government initiatives to embark on the digital transformation of workforce and enterprise in tandem with global and local needs. It considers how efforts address job redesign challenges and retraining in preparation for the fourth industrial revolution age era.
