Communicating Local Wisdom in Drafting Village Regulations on Sustainable Tourism Development

Abstract

Tourism is one of the hopes of economic growth, both at the national level and at the local level. However, the growth of tourism, explicitly targeting large scale tourism, has the potential to bring excesses that affect local communities in socio, economic, and cultural aspects. There is a fear that new tourism flows will ignite social change that might sometimes clash with the values of local wisdom first present in communities. This study aims to find out how local knowledge communicates within the community to have a voice within policies at the rural level to shape the form of regulations on developing sustainable tourism. This study uses an action research method that prioritizes participation, discussion and facilitation from a number of related stakeholders who will each use their respective roles in formulating policies that are beneficial to rural tourism without sacrificing existing local wisdom.
