Five Fs/Hs of Successful Aging: The Proactivity Model, Stress Management, and Quality of Later Life

Abstract

This paper is fivefold: to conceptualize and define successful aging, to discuss determinants and theories of successful aging, to discuss stressors and the impact on stress management on successful, to delineate the Five Fs/Hs Model for successful aging, and to discuss intervention strategies for successful aging and enhancing quality of life. Successful aging is linked with subjective psychological well-being and objective quality of life. Healthy and successful aging is possibly the most important research and social and public health policy issue related to aging since the 1980s. This paper synthesizes theories and intervention strategies on successful aging with the following conceptualization framework: life trajectories in life course, objective and subjective definitions of aging, determinants of successful aging, the Five Fs/Hs Model (fitness, financial, family, fortitude, and faith), effective stress management, successful aging, intervention strategies, and quality of life.
