Toward "Mental Accessibility": Mental Workload of Older People for Way-finding in Complex Built Environments

Abstract

This research project investigates the mental workload of older people for navigating in complex built environments in order to address the question of “How can we enable and support active ageing across the lifespan?” The project uses an innovative research design that incorporates 3D online reality modelling and cognitive experiment techniques in order to advance our theoretical and practical understanding of how people, specifically older people, navigate the interior of buildings. Expected outcomes of this research include identifying what aspects of built environments should be improved, and what types of smart building technology can enhance older people’s use and experiences of complex built environments.
