Value of Identity: Refocusing the Humanities in an Uncertain Market

Abstract

This paper will describe how a faculty of humanities in an Australian University embarked on a process of redefining their identity and refocusing their programs of study in an uncertain context. Generally, the humanities suffer when asked to compete with other programs of study which are perceived as being more attractive or useful. Additionally research funding in Australia heavily favours the sciences. This context triggered the realisation that a new identity was required, one that established the value and appeal of the humanities. The process was an opportunity for disciplinary silos to be relinquished as the faculty embarked on understanding how staff, students, other faculties, the wider university, and the community viewed the humanities. This understanding was used to refocus the identity of the faculty and the programs offered within for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The implications are clear, as the issues faced are common to many faculties of humanities across the world and sharing this process might help others who are grappling with similar challenges.
